This shoot in an empty penthouse in the Docklands was carefully planned and executed with a specific aesthetic in mind. I wanted a stark silent movie look and feel, and drawing inspiration from the characters and cinematography of Metropolis and The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari I asked two friends to pose for me. I had been taking photographs of them performing in live shows so there was already a familiarity and trust built up between us.

I envisaged these portraits as peepholes into their personae - provocative, humorous, ambiguous and fearless, while also emphasizing the importance of personal relationships and intimacy.
