Collodion Portraits
These portraits were created using the 19th-century wet plate collodion process - a meticulous and time-sensitive method involving the coating, sensitizing, exposing, and developing of a glass, tin, or acrylic plate, all within about fifteen minutes. Despite the narrow window of time, the process itself is slow, deliberate, and meditative. Each step becomes part of the final image, embedding the act of making into the photograph itself.
One of my subjects is the late renowned black-and-white developer and printer Klaus Kalde, whose studio and darkroom provided both the setting and inspiration for this series.
